The mission of the Alliance for Surgery and Anesthesia Presence (ASAP) is to provide a collaborative voice for the essential role of surgery within global public health. Our efforts focus on research, outcomes measurement and the data collection needed to define unmet surgical needs and advocate for improvement of infrastructure and expansion of capacity for delivery of surgical services through education and training. Such efforts intend to promote sustainable, cost effective surgical interventions within low and middle income countries where surgical services currently are limited.
Central to the mission of the working group is a multidisciplinary approach that acknowledges the complicated and diverse challenge that surgical care represents. As such, the ASAP is comprised of surgeons, anesthesiologists, obstetricians, gynecologists, emergency medicine physicians, certified nurse anesthetists and other nursing personnel, public health specialists, economists, and policy makers who share a vision for addressing unmet surgical need. Beyond the individual members, the ASAP brings together international organizations, academic institutions, surgical and anesthesia colleges and societies, and other global initiatives. We advocate for and foster partnerships between international organizations, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and national governments.
The vision of the ASAP is that this work will help to eliminate the disparities in premature death and disability that are amenable to surgical care through appropriate, sustainable and cost effective surgical solutions in low and middle income countries. It is hoped that our work will improve the timely diagnosis of surgical conditions, the delivery of safe surgical care provided with adequately trained personnel, safe anesthesia, and sufficient and sustainable infrastructure. These goals will be accomplished when emergency and essential surgery, is considered a necessary component of global public health, and is available to those in need throughout the global community.
